By Popular Demand – The Shampoo Recipe

A few posts back I described the homemade shampoo that my bride of 19 years now concocts for our family use. Our vicarious whelps have taken to the brew and are sporting lustrous manes that range in scent from peppermint to lemongrass, all good for masking teenage funk. I, too, have since become a consumer of this new granola elixir–full of wholesome goodness, absent chemicals of questionable nature, and fondly referred to as “No Poo Shampoo.”

Several of you have asked for the recipe. Here it is (from diynatural.com), including variations for oily and dry hair and scalp:

Shampoo

1 tbsp baking soda

1 cup water

6-8 drops of organic essential oils for fragrance (optional)*

*For oily hair, use citrus.

*For dry scalp and dandruff, use tea tree and/or peppermint.

Put ingredients in a bottle. Shake before using. Massage 1-2 minutes into hair and scalp. Rinse with water.

Conditioning Rinse

1 tbsp organic apple cider vinegar or lemon juice

1 cup water

6-8 drops of organic essential oils for fragrance (optional)*

*Oily hair: bergamot, lavender, lemon, rosemary, sandalwood, tea tree, ylang ylang.

*Dry scalp/dandruff: tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus, lemon, sage, or rosemary.

Put ingredients in a bottle. Shake before using. Massage 1-2 minutes into hair and scalp. Rinse with water.
